Please join us for our monthly commons, the Province’s combined business meeting and social gathering, to be held tonight in the canton of Northpass.
We will be at the New Rochelle Library on Friday September 20th, starting at 7pm. Business portion of the meeting begins at 8pm.
The New Rochelle Library is one block from the New Rochelle train station on the MetroNorth New Haven line. I-95 runs right past the station.
You may join the meeting remotely via Google Meet at meet.google.com/cof-yths-rww using Chrome or Firefox browsers, iOS or Android apps, or traditional telephone dial-in.
At Pennsic, the Viceregents delivered an Award of the Golden Lyre to Godiva de la Mer on behalf of Ozurr and Fortune. Young Johanna Brandrsdottir was inducted into the Province’s Order of the Sea-Urchin in appreciation for her service at local events and the lovely jewelry she has created. Friderich Grimme was recognized for his skill in archery, and for his efforts training so many of the province’s archers, by making him a member of the Order of the Silver Sea-Lion. And the Viceregents rewarded Angelica di Nova Lipa for her many years of service to the Province — at events, in artistry, and behind the scenes — by inducting her into the Order of the Seahorse.
At Barleycorn, the Viceregents delivered an Award of Arms ordered by their Majesties East for Meadhbh O’Gairbhith. Buenaventura Miguel Rivera and Galen Mac Byrne were inducted into the Order of the Sea Dog for their years of service in the Canton of Northpass. Conandil ingen Donngaile was made a member of the Order of the Silver Lantern in recognition of her artistry and her service to the Province’s dance community. And Catelin Straquhin stepped down as Provincial Archery Champion, passing that title on to Mongu Chinua, who had won the day’s tournament.
The Crown Province of Østgarðr is the greater New York City chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a not-for-profit educational and social organization dedicated to re-creating aspects of medieval and Renaissance culture. September is one of our busiest months! In addition to our ongoing weekly practices (detailed in our last quarterly post), we have many demos and events. The main difference between the two is that demos are focused on outreach and educating non-SCA people about the SCA and the middle ages, and events don’t have that expectation of outreach and may have an entry fee or require that you wear an attempt at time-period-appropriate clothing (“garb” – if you need help with this, the chatelaine can help you).

June 2019 Minutes • Østgarðr Commons
The June commons meeting was held June 19th at Mistress Sofya’s home in Queens. Here are the minutes as recorded by Alienor Salton. The officers’ reports are attached at the end.
The summer is the busiest time for combat-focused events – I hope you’re as excited as I am!
Armored combat is running, weather permitting, in McCarren Park in Brooklyn, 7pm Tuesday nights; for updates, see the Facebook group “Fighter Practice in New York City.”
Rapier fencing is also running, weather permitting, in Central Park (the corner of the park by 59 – Columbus Circle), 7pm Wednesday nights; for updates, see the Facebook group “Historical Arts Rapier Training.” When the weather is good, bardic circle is at the same place/time.
Updates to both armored combat practice and rapier practice, as well as possibly other practices and events, may be found at the Facebook group “SCA NYC: Crown Province of Østgarðr“.
Northpass dance practice information may also be found at the Facebook group for the Canton of Northpass.
Østgarðr Commons meetings, which are open to the populace, are always on the third Friday of the month, and rotate location through the province — check the prior Commons agenda for the latest on locations, or Facebook! For those in Manhattan, Whyt Whey Commons tend to be on the first Thursday, colocated with their monthly arts&sciences Evening in the Solar (note that this is pushed back a week on July 4 week). In Brooklyn, Brokenbridge Commons are on weekends to be announced.
