A&S Meeting and Public Demo in New Rochelle

The SCA will have an A&S meeting on Saturday April 8th, 2023, from 11
AM to 3 PM, in the meeting room of the New Rochelle Public Library.

The central project will be painting heraldic banners of the Northpass
populace badge.  Leather working, Calligraphy and Illustration, and
Medieval Games will lend additional interest to the gathering.  All
are invited.   As this meeting is in a public place, we may attract
members of the general public.  We will have brochures and business
cards on hand for any who demonstrate interest in our activities.

Please be aware that the library does not permit food or drink in the
meeting room.

The meeting room is the backstage area of library’s auditorium,
accessed by a door off the main lobby.

The library is located at 1 Library Plaza, New Rochelle, NY 10801, in
southeastern Westchester County.

There is metered public parking (three hour maximum), both on street
and in a lot nearby (pay by licence plate at a cash/credit card kiosk,
or through the smartphone app ParkMobile).
The library is also within easy walking distance from the New Rochelle
Metro North train station;  from the train platform ascend either the
stairs or in the elevator to the upper level of the station, and
proceed directly to the only street exit, crossing the street straight
ahead, then walking a full block to Library Green, and a bit further
to the actual library.    There are short flights of stairs to the
library, and between the Library Green entrance and the meeting room.

Thanks from the Scandinavian East Coast Museum

May 19, 2022

On behalf of the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, I would like to thank each of you for participating in Viking Fest 2022.  Last year, we could only have performers, due to Covid.  This year we were able to add food, rides and re-enactors.  Incrementally, we are getting back to what our event had been.

They’re back.  It is so nice to have the SCA –   Østgarðr join us again this year for their exciting and educational displays and demos under the leadership of Catelin.  Also, the trial was such a big hit with the kids and adults – Tusen takk – a thousand thanks.

A shout out to our Rune Reader – Eileen aka Randgrithr. She also had connected me with a botanist who had planned to come, but got ill that day. Sorry she was unable to do the interactive Traditional Dance from the Harz Mountains that is connected to Norse mythology. The rain prevented it. Tusen takk!

And our wonderful performers were a big hit. Ellen Lindstrom our favorite Swedish meatball on accordion, Clann Eireann Pipers from Bay Ridge and Redhawk Council even though the weather washed out their performance, they showed up, I am looking forward to seeing them next year. And I would be remiss not to include Crazy Carlsen on games. Tusen takk to all!

It was so special to have Scandinavian food from Sporting Club Gjoa ( the oldest independent soccer club in the U.S.) made by the talented Hege and served with her crew. It was delicious, a real treat. Tusen takk!

So great to Norwegian Baked with Hedvig and company back providing her delicious Norwegian flatbread made in Brooklyn at BAT, about 8 blocks from the event. What a nice addition to have those beautiful blue and yellow cookies. All proceeds raised for the latter will be donated to benefit Ukraine. Tusen takk!

The Rosemaling Society has been part of our event I think from the start for about 20 years. I am sad they will be disbanding, but hope the individual artists continue to practice and share their craft. Tusen takk!

The Owl’s Head Horticulture Group who keep the lovely park in which our event is held lush and lovely and offered a display of historic photos for the day. Tusen takk!

Unfortunately, we had some rain towards the end of the event, but we were able to salvage most of the day. Best of all, the community came back and we could share our Scandinavian history with them through our positive synergistic efforts.

Best,

Victoria Hofmo, President

Scandinavian East Coast Museum

Masking Requirements. All attendees at indoor events are required to wear masks in compliance with the East Kingdom COVID policy.

COVID Event check-in process. All attendees who are eligible to be vaccinated still need to show either proof of full vaccination or a medically-supervised negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of the in-person gathering. Event staff will continue to check this documentation. Attendees over the age of 18 also still need to show a gov’t-issued photo ID or SCA blue card with the same name as the vaccination card/negative test results.

Host/event staff no longer need to collect contact tracing information.
As part of the check-in process for attending an in-person gathering, the ATTENDEE will sign a form attesting to the following: “By signing below, you are confirming that you have presented proper identification, along with either proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours prior to the start of the event. (If you present proof of a negative COVID test it must comply with the current SCA COVIDSafe rules)”.

Come Help at the Viking Fest Demo

Hey folks!

If you’re not committed to the Lion’s End Spring Schola, Armiger Catelin Straquhin is organizing an Østgarðr demonstration/presence at the Viking Festival in Owl Head’s Park this weekend.

Where: Owl’s Head Park Colonial Road & 68 St Brooklyn, NY 11220

When: Saturday May 14, 2022 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (setup begins at 9 a.m.)

This year’s festival is “multi-cultural Viking” themed, so the demo will be focusing on how multiple cultures impact the Nordic world and vice versa.

If you plan on going, please let Catelin know when you plan to be there and what you plan to bring with you for the demonstration! Armiger Catelin can be reached via email: 245476@members.eastkingdom.org

Parking: There is no parking allowed in the park; attendees must park on the street. Bring hand carts if needed.

Amenities: Since this is an NYC park, if you can please bring chairs, tables, and pop-ups. For accommodations, email the SCA Demo Organizer 245476@members.eastkingdom.org and we will do our best to help.

The NYC Marathon is also happening that same day, so plan accordingly.
