Fiber Festival Demo: Saturday, October 12

The Kings County Fiber Festival celebrates the talented people who turn string and thread into useful objects and works of art — and the Crown Province of Østgarðr is joining in to demonstrate that the handcrafts of the pre-modern era still have relevance today.

This year’s festival will be held at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn, at 336 3rd Street, on Saturday October 12 from 10:00 to 5:00.

We’ll have a exhibition space at the festival and are looking for a few more talented people to help us show off the wide range of fiber crafts practiced in the SCA. If you spin, dye, weave, sew, knit, make lace, or otherwise craft with roving, thread, or yarn, this is an amazing opportunity to show off your work to a big crowd of handcrafting enthusiasts. (And of course there will be time to visit the many fiber vendors who are also part of the event.)

We also have room for a couple of folks who enjoy chatelaining and can explain to passersby how their interests in fiber arts can fit into the universe of our Society. Come out and help us introduce the SCA to an appreciative audience of crafters!

To join our exhibition, please reach out to our event steward, Eadwine the Younger, via Messenger at https://m.me/100068704373783 or via Discord at https://discord.com/channels/@me/875546920272166912.

Cancelled: Demo at King’s County Fiber Festival

Unfortunately, due to expected inclement weather, the King’s County Fiber Festival, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 7th, is cancelled. As a result, the SCA demonstration at the festival is also cancelled.

The organizers of the Fiber Festival have no plans to reschedule for this year. We look forward to having an opportunity to demonstrate at the Fiber Festival next year.

Come to the Østgarðr Demo at the Kings County Fiber Festival

The Crown Province of Østgarðr comes together at the Kings County Fiber Festival!

The Kings County Fiber Festival serves to encourage the revival of traditional fiber arts. The Festival embraces both fiber and handmade artists and resource providers that make their work possible. Hosted on the grounds of the Old Stone House of Brooklyn – originally built in 1699 as the Vechte family farm – the Kings County Fiber Festival includes crocheters, dyers, felters, knitters, quilters, spinners, and weavers, as well as artists creating design works that incorporate fiber as an integral material.

The Society of Creative Anachronism joins this year to display elements of fiber history and recreating fiber arts from times long gone. Join us and share your love for history and fiber with members and the public alike!

If you are interested in participating, displaying, teaching a class, or camaraderie, please reach out to Catelin Straquhin for more information: 245476@members.eastkingdom.org. There is also an online Planning Meeting for the demo at 7 p.m. on 9/27/2023.

The festival is free to attend, and will be going on through the day from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: The Village Green 361 Main Street Farmingdale, NY 11735

Setup Begin at 9 a.m. with the public demonstrations starting at 10 a.m. The demo concludes at 6 p.m.

A&S Meeting and Public Demo in New Rochelle

The SCA will have an A&S meeting on Saturday April 8th, 2023, from 11
AM to 3 PM, in the meeting room of the New Rochelle Public Library.

The central project will be painting heraldic banners of the Northpass
populace badge.  Leather working, Calligraphy and Illustration, and
Medieval Games will lend additional interest to the gathering.  All
are invited.   As this meeting is in a public place, we may attract
members of the general public.  We will have brochures and business
cards on hand for any who demonstrate interest in our activities.

Please be aware that the library does not permit food or drink in the
meeting room.

The meeting room is the backstage area of library’s auditorium,
accessed by a door off the main lobby.

The library is located at 1 Library Plaza, New Rochelle, NY 10801, in
southeastern Westchester County.

There is metered public parking (three hour maximum), both on street
and in a lot nearby (pay by licence plate at a cash/credit card kiosk,
or through the smartphone app ParkMobile).
The library is also within easy walking distance from the New Rochelle
Metro North train station;  from the train platform ascend either the
stairs or in the elevator to the upper level of the station, and
proceed directly to the only street exit, crossing the street straight
ahead, then walking a full block to Library Green, and a bit further
to the actual library.    There are short flights of stairs to the
library, and between the Library Green entrance and the meeting room.
