Solar, July 31 — Humanism in Italian Renaissance Art

[Crossposted from Whyt Whey presents the Saturday Night Solar: Humanism in Italian Renaissance Art During the Quattrocento Period]

Come join Lady Maude Louisiana d’Orleans in a seminar discussion on the effects of humanism in Italian Renaissance art during the Quattrocento period. Together, we will explore the influence of the Medici family in conjunction with Rome’s greatest benefactor, the papacy, and how they promoted art that reflected both human and religious qualities.

We will see how the idea that man was created in the image of God was an ideology that flourished in Italy during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Moreover, for the purposes of understanding Renaissance painting in Florence, we will survey Florentine painters, ranging from Masolino to Botticelli, and their works for their trends of humanism in art.

Central Park Picnic — Sunday, August 1

Denizens of Whyt Whey and the surrounding lands, join us for a park picnic to celebrate the summer and spend time in good company after so long apart!

We will gather on Sunday, July 25, starting at 2:00 PM — unless the weather is inclement, in which case we will announce a postponement to the following Sunday, August 1.

[UPDATE, July 25: the weather forecast for this afternoon has been downgraded to “scattered thunderstorms,” so it looks like we need to push our picnic back to the rain date, next Sunday, August 1. The long-range forecast suggests next Sunday will be dry and pleasant — I look forward to seeing you all then!]

[UPDATE, August 1: Today’s weather is looking pleasant — comfortable temperatures and no rain until late in the day — so we’re moving ahead with our picnic plans for this afternoon. Pack your lunch and join us at 2:00 on the Great Hill!]

Volunteer Opportunity: Provincial Webminister

I was appointed as Provincial Webminister on an acting basis when the previous office holder moved away earlier this summer, and although I enjoy doing this work, I already have too many things on my plate, so I am recruiting volunteers to take on the role.

If you’re interested in the position, please speak up at Commons this evening, or reach out to me directly.

I’d love to take on one or two people as deputies as soon as possible, and then turn the office over to one of them as of the August meeting. Of course, I’ll still be around, and am glad to provide ongoing support and assistance as needed.

Attached below are a job description and some notes about the tools and tasks involved — and of course, if you have any questions that aren’t answered here, please don’t hesitate to ask me!

Come to the Ethereal Feast of the Fireflies — August 14

Greetings to the populace of Østgarðr!

The Canton of Brokenbridge is inviting you all to our Ethereal Feast of the Fireflies.

As we stand in the dusk of the pandemic, we long for the Pennsic Potluck, that magical night at camp where we get together, bring food, and make merry with our chosen time-traveling family. While a paltry replacement, Brokenbridge wants to make an attempt to recreate that night to hold us out for our final year of solitude. This includes tent backdrops, candle light, party games, and a box of goodies delivered to your door!

WHEN: August 14th starting at 6:00 pm Eastern Time.

WHERE: Online via Zoom. Pre-register to receive the link.

REGISTRATION: https://forms.gle/vDtwXHoHxsku3dhr7
• With kit: Cost is $10. Maximum of 24 kits, first-come first-served. Must register by August 6th.
• Without kit: free.

KIT: The package will include a backdrop-making kit, swag, a printed games booklet, and a recipe booklet. If you are opting in for a kit, you MUST pre-register by August 6th.

Going kit-less? Choose an appropriate Zoom virtual background, or create your own Pennsic-themed setting!

POT LUCK: Since we can’t physically bring our own food to the potluck, we’ll be bringing recipes! We will be collecting people’s favorites and you can download your copy soon! If you have a recipe you want to share, please reach out to me or Randve L’il Hammar.

Feel free to prepare something! But bring your food – we shall be feasting together so that we can be asked questions just as we’re putting food in our mouths!

Drinking is encouraged! So don’t forget a bottle of your favorite!

Best,

— Ragnarr Bliskegg
— Seneshal of Brokenbridge

Provincial Commons — July 21

Greetings, populace!  We are abuzz with plans and stirrings.  We had a lot to talk about at our last 2 commons (May & June).  So much did we talk, that I struggled to condense the conversations and finally gave up.  You may read essentially a transcript of what transpired at both meetings on our website.  (Thank you to Mathghamhain for taking such excellent notes!)

https://ostgardr.eastkingdom.org/commons-minutes-for-may-2021/ https://ostgardr.eastkingdom.org/commons-minutes-for-june-2021/

Please read them!!  If you were not there, you will learn much.  If you were there, please review to see if you volunteered for anything, and if possible be prepared to comment at Commons on your progress or your regret therein.  😉

Commons will be Wednesday, July 21st, via our usual Google Meet channel.  Join us online: https://meet.google.com/nhu-qsgk-zzi or dial in (audio only): ‪(US) +1 402-364-0138‬ PIN: ‪616 864 602#‬  Call begins at 7pm.  Meeting will convene at 7:30.

Officers, please submit your reports by Monday, so we can all review them before the meeting.  Thank you!!

Fencing Practice Joins Armored Combat

With the coming of summer, Østgarðr’s fencers and rattan fighters have joined forces for a combined weekly practice in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park.

Practice is generally held every Tuesday starting at 7:00 PM, but may be cancelled due to weather or schedule conflicts; for confirmation, check our Facebook group or email the armored combat marshal or fencing marshal to be sure the practice is on.

We generally meet by the cluster of trees on the right foul line of the third ballfield, close to the center entrance from Driggs Avenue; visit the McCarren directions page for a map.
