Ostgardr Pennsic Camp

We are deeply grateful to everyone who made the Ostgardr Pennsic Camp a success.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Brandr Aronsson for expertly managing the vital role of Land Agent.

We are incredibly thankful to Catelin Straquhin for coordinating the potluck, even sacrificing much-needed rest to prepare her famous Samoan Chicken.

We extend our gratitude to all who contributed to the Ostgardr Pennsic Camp, whether through food, water, ice, supplies, or the challenging work needed to set up, maintain, and break down the camp including setting up the water supply hose, electrical extension cords, tables, chairs, sheet walls, shelving, kitchen with camp stove, a dish and hand washing station, a fire pit, and common tent and shade shelters. A special thank you to everyone who managed the tent canvas and poles—taking them from storage, setting them up, staking them out, monitoring, taking them down, drying, folding, and transporting them back to storage.

We are deeply appreciative of Sofya for generously donating ten comfortable, cushioned chairs to the Province for Pennsic use.

Every contribution is cherished and plays a significant role in making Ostgardr Camp the family it is. Thank you all!

Viceregal Highlights

The big Ostgardian news for September is the selection of the martial and bardic champions for the next year at this year’s superbly organized and managed Feast of John Barleycorn sponsored by Northpass.   Co-Stewards Vitasha Ivanova doch’ & Catelin Straquihin and their teams of volunteers created a perfect event.

Our New Champions are

Armored CombatPerez ben Meir Gerson
FencingEliayhu al-Tahli “Tally”
ArcheryIvarr Valsson
Thrown WeaponsWojtek z Wisny
BardicDrustan of Old Stonebridges and Teodora Ivanić
Youth CombatNova of Ostgardr

Perez, as is the right of the Champion of Armored Combat, chose this year’s Queen of Love and Beauty, his Lady Wife, Rebecca, who now bears the embroidered purse  regalia dedicated to that office.  Let the record indicate that there appeared to be some indecision on his part as various other ladies in the assemblage attempted blandishments and temptations to achieve

this Queenly status, but his resistance was stern, and in the end he chose most wisely.

Retiring Champions were given a medallion token (beautifully designed by Kunigunde Wedemann) to commemorate their service.

We were privileged with the task of conveying to both Kunigunde Wedemann and Vitasha Ivanova doch’, recognition of their accomplishments in service by the populace and the Crown of the East Kingdom with induction into the Order of the Silver Wheel.

A previously won recognition from A.S. LII, that of Champion of Fence, was commemorated by presenting its scroll to Don Brendan Firebow, due during the Viceregency of Lada and Suuder.  The appropriate Mongol Cheer concluded the presentation.

Lemony Quest

  • On the continuing saga of Mathghamhain’s Quest for the Perfect Lemon, two beautiful large citrus fruits of a non-lemony color were presented to the Viceregents in hopes that this would conclude his Quest.  Regrettably, these fruits did not fulfill the requirement.  A haiku and a long form poem were read to inspire a more effective quest for the perfect lemon.
  • Our Youth Combat Champion Rees presented the Viceregents two perfect lemons won as prizes for his expertise in thrown weapons.
  • The Viceregents were given during the course of the day, from many other  individuals, lemons without blemish.  Sadly, again, Mathgamhain was not one of these…. And so, his Quest continues.
  • Vitasha and Lada  made recommendations for the best base vodka to use to produce limoncello using said lemons.

Seneschal’s Report

Update on Unification (Shires of Midland Vale and Old Stonebridges petitions to join the Crown Province as Cantons) The new EK Polling Deputy inherited a backlog, including our request(s).
Elections Q4 for some officer positionsAt the October Commons we will announce 2025 mandated officer turnovers, and continuation of officer positions.    Officers who wish to renew in their present positions, please contact Seneschal.
Finance
Budgets for “Departments”
The Finance Committee needs to define which departments are eligible for yearly funded budgets, the amount of those budgets, as well as the cash reserves required in the bank account before those disbursements can be made.
Google doc with details being forwarded to Seneschal by Historian.
Notification ChecklistThanks to Mathghamhain, we have an additional checklist on notifications (internal and public facing) for events, practices, solars, and so on.  This will be shared with the officers for review and comment.
John Barleycorn Wrap up – Catelin Straquhin expressed thanks for all the volunteers and attendees, the community that came together to make Barleycorn happen.  Thanks and an extensive list of contributors was posted earlier.
Attendance was 106, way above estimated since Barleycorn was running against Harpers.  Of the astounding number of  non-members attending (20), five were pre-registered, probably the largest number of non-members attending in recent years.
Estimated gross income $2,000.
There was lots of positive feedback both on Lady Grainne’s Dayboard and the event site tokens which were made by Lady Pia,   Thanks to both!
Setup and takedown went smoothly
We have identified Opportunities for improvement inMarketing Communicating the schedule day-ofImproving communications amongst the Champions, Marshals MOL, and the Stewards because better communications could result in more people competing.Notes for next year / further years, include revisiting dayboard options and or planning for feast.
Vitasha Ivanova doch’ on the food drive donation success:Hope Community Services were very pleased with the Food and non-food items donated (photo of the carload of items shared on social media).   We may do another collection at Goat’s Inn.

Vicereines

Hundred minutes is this weekend. Fight with valor. Share your photos with our social media officer. Support our populace who are being recognized in court. Have a wonderful time!

Thank you to everyone who is part of the ongoing branch unificiation effort.

It’s a tradition for Ost to make favors for the queen. Let’s organize a day to come together some time over the winter to work on these.

There’s talk of a war, preparations to follow.

We want to recognize folks for their efforts. Nominate folks for awards, here and at the kingdom level.

Seneschal

… I want to touch on Commons, Minutes, Note and Transparency.  This came up on our Discord Server and several official emails have come to me about the needs of all.  For now, I have decided that I need help to review this and craft a response.  The Vicerience have graciously agreed to review all the material we have about the situation and with me on this.  If you have thoughts or notes you want to send to use, please email us using our officer emails.

I’ve reached out to the vicereiens for input.

If you have thoughts or opinions, on minutes or public postings, share them with me and the vicereines via official channels.

We’ll talk about it further in December

Unification

Some people are giving a thumbs up showing that they’ve already received their polls.

If you’re asking about whether you’re being polled, the kingdom decided they didn’t need to poll the province.

If you have input, you can send it to me and I’ll forward it to kingdom with a receipt to you.

Polls are due Deccember 10. (After a one-month window.)

I’m hoping that things move forward and we can be one province as of January.

Aislinn, I sent a message back to the polling office as I received two ballots and was wondering if one of them was for the minor.

Sofya: We did have a meeting for the populace, and the response was very positive.

Officers

Rangarr: We’ll vote to approve new officers in December.

Thanks to the newcomers, Teodora as exchequer, Alfarr as historian, Kunigunde becoming herald, Pia as Chencello minor, Ivarr as MOL

Catelin: If you’re interested in taking a position, but don’t feel confident about it, deputies are encouraged. I’d love to have a deputy chatelaine.

Ragnarr: this is also true for folks who don’t come to commons meetings. Tell your friends about the opportunity. Taking these positions is a growth path to other opportunities at the kingdom.

Finance committee met and I want to talk about budges.

No officer has a budget, but we encourage all of you to think about what resources you can use to benefit your area of responsibility.

Submit a proposal. As long as it’s reasonable it will not be denied.

Send us your ideas, we’ll discuss it and either approve it or give you feedback.

Anything that will benefit the province or the populace.

Business cards, software, equipkment, or anything.

Investiture

Lada: As of a month ago, we have heirs. Two years ago we did a coronation for them, and now they will need another coronation.

Alienor: Can we get an elephant this time?

Lada: No elephant.

They haven’t explicitly said they’d like to do here but they did say they would welcome a bid.

I’ve reached out to Snug Harbor, where there is a new contact (Eric) who is pulling together numbers for me.

Thanks to Ragnarr for helping with the numbers, and Lani who helped with the food budget.

The budget numbers are still preliminary.

We’ll do things a bit differently — we can reuse banners without painting new ones.

We won’t using our pavilions, which had trouble last time because the site doesn’t allow , instead we will rent tents that have free-standing tents.

Ronan’s site suggestions: Judsen Memorial, off Washington Square

Lighting has been fixed, so we’ll be able to see during break down

Fencing is prettier now

We’ll have power on the stage

Kitchen in their building has been improved

Sofya: Thank you for putting this together. Will the rented tents be the same?

Lada: The tents we’re looking at renting has an internal structure that makes ti more stable when not staked.

The site will give us rental contract and prices in early December.

The bid is due December 15

I’ve sent a prelimianry budget to the financial committe, but I might need to tweak it.

Math: two years is enough to recharge

Broccin: what’s your expected gate fee?

Lada: $25 gate plus $10 for dayboard.

Math: for events with optional dayboard, how many people opted in?

Lada: Mudthaw Dayboard: 200 cap

Crown tournament: 80% took the dayboard

Sofya: I like making dayboard optional because people have such different food preferences. And it helps keep costs down.

Lada: they will handle porta potties and dumpsters

Catelin and Twyg drop

Ragnarr: is the site dry?

Lada: There’s an on-site alcohol vendor

Lada: If we do a Japanese menu, I’m wondering what we can do to honor her Indian persona.

Should hear back by January 15.

First or second week of April.

Sofya: Let’s put out an inquery asking for feedback on the idea.

Mathg: let’s get a sense of who’s on board.

  Multiple officers: hands up.

Any objections or concerns?

  –

Lada: I’ll check on other events and the neighborhood.

– Don’t allow parking by the stage.

Jenna: You need to provide accomodations for public parking.

Sofya: could we provide a golf cart to get people to and from parking?

Lada: I’m not sure, but I’ll explore that.

Jenna: You could get teens to volunteer to help move things with wagons.

Vitasha: At another site, we got permission to reserve a few public parking spaces for handicapped use only.

Lada: Because the space is public, we’re limited

Vitasha: We also wanted to use golf carts

Richard: Our NYS non-profit tax ID might help keep the costs down.

Lada: I’ll bring these issues up with the site rep and see what they can allow.

Ragnarr: We’re also recruiting people to help Lada. I’ll post about this before the weekend.

Last coronation had 450 people cap and we hit it.

First

Handicapped portas?

Site asked: Did you get a map?

Oliver: Survey for Van Cortland Park revision, please suggest archery range.

– We have ranges in Staten Island and NOrthpass and it’d be nice to have in the middle.

– Jenna: there’s also a range in Nassau, but our local marshal hasn’t been actively.

Ragnarr: send A&S notes to Brandr, and social media, and dchronicler

Alec: Wasn’t too cold this week, but we’re pausing for the winter.

Albrecht is looking for sites in Westchester for a possible monthly process

Broccin: the site we used in Orange county for practice is going out of business.

Aislinn: The circleville church is still available.

Is archery continuing?

– Suuder: we’re finished for the season

– I’m organizing archery at hundred minutes

– solar

– Gallery

– northpass Soup day / bread butter

– Valhalla

– three more class spots, now has three (scribing runes, gay vikings, leis)

– 55 spots

– Purgatory; second floor is not handicapped accessible

– Reach out to Albrecht and Arnora

– Ronan: do classes need to be viking themed? I could teach a class on Scots Gaelic prononciation.

– Hundred Minutes

Gibbs 7:16 PM: Salty and coping. Mostly.

Richard 7:16 PM: We are pretty much ALL in “Coping Mode” these days

Gibbs 7:21 PM: I didn’t bother trying to get a ride for 100MW. I don’t do the fighty stuffs, and no guarantee there anyone daytiipping will have space for me.

Catelin 7:46 PM: Lol Disneyland!!

Gibbs 7:51 PM: The wind was not the tents’ friend.

Oliver 7:52 PM: it is when you eat beans.

Catelin 7:52 PM: Does that mean the heirs have nixed the idea of fireworks?

Gibbs 7:53 PM: What are the odds we’ll have another quinceanera photo-op invasion?

Ragnarr 7:54 PM: Re Fireworks: It’s still a want but not something we will do for them.

Catelin 7:55 PM: Ty ty

Gibbs 7:59 PM: That’s reasonable for a coronation and bento lunch.

Bardic – Missive From Foxy The Bard

“To the performers, musicians, and bards I present to thee: A CHALLENGE!

I wish to see three performances that will entertain, educate, and impress us and the audience!

This year’s challenge will be three rounds:

  • The first round will be to entertain us. Bring us your most jovial, amusing, and laugh-inducing performance!
  • The second round, we ask you to educate us. Give us a performance that teaches us, either through song/lyrics/performance/sources, of a period or an event that interests you.
  • The third round is one of technical prowess! Display to us your best skill, whether it be in instrument, vocals, or mummery!

Each participant will be scored at the end of the round.

If there are more than 12 participants, then half will be selected to proceed to the 2nd round. After the second round half will be selected again for the final round.

If there are less than 11 participants, all will continue to the second round and three will be selected for the final round.

At the end of the championship there will be two winners:

-The New Ostgardr Bardic Champion

-The People’s Bardic Choice Award

Yours in Song,

Foxy the Bard

Archery – Missive From Eanraig The Bonesetter

Unto the populace of Ostgardr and the East, a challenge will be put forth to all archers who wish to vie for the honor of Archery Champion of Ostgardr. For this year’s Archery Championship, a series of challenging shoots will be presented in a fashion of a maritime quest. Archers will need a minimum of 12 arrows to complete the quests.

THE HUNT FOR EPIC LOOT

As to the quest, archers must first procure a crew from the Bloody Kneecap Inn – a Quartermaster is a must, and a ship must have a minimum of 6 crew. Next, to get to a ship for your travels, you must thin a herd of sheep that block your path. Next, you must “liberate” a ship from its moorings, without harming your crew (if you should lose crew members, you will pay a penalty). Then, you must navigate the treacherous shoals and sandbars by plotting a course from our shores to the wide open Ocean. After this, you will have to choose wisely which small island may be the hidden home of the fabled treasure, and lastly, after finding the treasure chest, you must either destroy the lock or get one of your reluctant crew to pick the trapped chest. Scoring will be based on the total number of arrows used to complete the quest, and if a tie happens, a tie breaker will be decided the day of the event. There will be in play a “mercy” rule, should a single shoot be too difficult. The overall winner is the archer who uses the fewest arrows, and the Vicereigns will choose from the members using the fewest shots to be their next Archery Champion.

THE SHOOTS

THE RULES:

  • 12 arrows per shoot maximum.  You can bypass any shoot by paying a 12 arrow penalty, OR take a score of 12 if you decide the shoot is too difficult at any time during each individual round.
  • Winner will be the person who uses the LEAST amount of arrows over the entire challenge.
  • Archers can choose which shoot they wish to do, in any order.
  • Archers will work in pairs and on the honor system to count their shots and score.

PICK A CREW    You need 6 crew members to man the Brinehammer, your ship.  Go to the Bloody Kneecap and select crew – your ship NEEDS a Quartermaster, so that target is at a premium.  There are 2 other special crew members – the Sawbones (-1 arrow on the Liberate the Brinehammer shoot) and the Carpenter (-1 arrow on the Navigate the Seas)  You may do 6 arrows/bolts twice, OR pay the 12 arrow penalty – you will automatically be granted a Quartermaster.

THIN THE HERD   A flock of sheep, a rare MacEanraig short legged rainbow hybrid, blocks your  path to the Brinehammer.  You must hit each sheep ONCE to clear the flock.  You are responsible to figure out if you have hit a sheep or not.  Should you miss the first time around, you must shoot the ones you missed in the second round.  Paying the 12 arrow penalty will allow the Shepherd to clear the flock, at his own pace.

LIBERATE THE BRINEHAMMER  (30 SECONDS TIMED)   Archers need 2 arrows/bolts in the rope to free the ship.  Your less than intelligent crew is helping, but may get in the way. If you hit one of your crew, +1 arrow penalty (the Sawbones will negate the first crew hit at each round of shooting, max -2 arrows/bolts).  You may pay the  arrow penalty at any time to free your ship.

NAVIGATE THE SEAS  The path to the Seas is fraught with dangers and sandbars.  You must navigate to the Seas by selecting a waypoint in the dark blue waters for your ship.  Ties go to the Sandbar.  Each waypoint can be chosen once, in any order.  If you miss a waypoint, you MUST hit it on your second round of shooting.  Running aground on a sandbar will cost you a +1 arrow/bolt penalty, (the Carpenter will negate first arrow penalty per round, max -2 arrows/bolts). Paying the 12 arrow penalty get the Quartermaster to wake up and sail the Brinehammer out to sea.

FIND THE TREASURE ISLAND  (30 SECONDS TIMED)  You need only 1 arrow or bolt in the island chosen for you. (see numbers next to your name)  Trees do NOT count, and you must decide if you have hit the correct Island.  You may shoot 6 projectiles twice for this, or pay the 12 arrow penalty at any time during this shoot to have the Lucky Sea Otter guide you to the correct island.

GET THE TREASURE  You have found the treasure chest, but there is a poison needle trap in the lock.   You must EITHER 1) get 2 arrows/bolts in the lock to break it, OR 2) shoot Philippe Lafitte in the feet 3 times, to coerce him to pick the lock.  If you hit Philippe ANYWHERE but his bare legs and feet, he runs away and you must shoot the lock from that point on (even in round 2 of shooting).  Paying the 12 arrow penalty will cause your rowdy impatient crew to smash the chest open with picks and shovels.

Fencing – Missive From Ryouku’jin of the Iron Skies

We are doing 4 buckets of round robin using:

  • Sword and dagger/Case
  • Sword and buckler
  • 2 hander

Top 4 of each pool make the 16

Rotating forms at the quarters

Finals are best of 7 opening with spears
Loser gets first choice

If we don’t have enough fencers for buckets we do a full round Robin with top score to make the 16.

Missive From Samson of Ireland, Host of Sir Edward’s Challenge

Northpass, and the Crown Province of Ostgardr welcome all rattan fighters who are able to travel to our lands this Day of John Barleycorn to come and test not only their skill of arms but their knowledge as well in the traditional tournament of Sir Edward!  This tournament will begin with Sir Edward’s classic general knowledge written exam to include heraldry, dance, chess and both world and SCA history!

The tournament, also in the vein of tradition this year, will be a double elimination bracket tournament fought with a bring your best weapon form, semi and finals best of 3 and 5 respectively, forms to be determined day of.

Join us to show your skill, knowledge, and spirit!
