Officer Report Items For Discussion
- Seneschal: Thanks to the officers for preparing their reports in advance!
- Award recommendations: See links to kingdom & provincial award descriptions in the Viceregal report below. Polling order deadline for 1st polling of Ioannes & Honig is July 25th. Award recommendations for provincial awards are requested by July 31, for presentation at Barleycorn. Please reach out to Lada for advice on how to write an award recommendation.
- Re-opening guidelines reminder: *no food sharing*. Think packed lunch, not potluck. On-site sign-in with COVID tracing form. *Posted* Harassment Policy and Infectious Disease Disclaimer.
- Volunteer opportunities upcoming or available *now*: open or soon-to-be-open positions include Viceroy & Vicereine, Seneschal, Chatelaine, Webminister, and Whyt Whey Seneschal. Positions with an incumbent who may choose to run again at the end of their term (Dec. 31, 2021) include Herald, Minister of Arts & Sciences, Fencing Marshal, Minister of Lists, and Historian.
- Social media: needs content and also volunteers who are comfortable with the platforms we have available to us (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, LinkTree, Discord).
– Albrecht and a number of people are working on Discord. Albrecht says please join us, they will share a link.
– Lada is the point person for LinkTree. She will also continue as the primary driver of our Instagram account. She has been our main social media coordinator, and has excellent hashtags.
– Edwin volunteered to be the point person for Twitter.
– Catelin was elected for TikTok via universal acclaim.
– Albrecht volunteered to cover both YouTube and Twitch streaming.
– Facebook seems well saturated and needs no additional stewards.
– The newly formed social committee (comprising everyone who volunteered above, plus the existing members of the committee) will set up a meeting to coordinate.
- e-Horse: next issue Sept. 1st, please submit content!! Art, articles, pictures, shout-outs, all welcome. Email seahorse@ostgardr.eastkingdom.org
- Postal address for heraldic submissions has changed. See link in Drasma’s report, below.
Event Planning
- New site development! Winfield Jai has found a potential indoor space, with an accompanying demo opportunity. The GLO Community Center [https://glownyc.org] in Flushing, 133-29 41st Ave., next to the Queens Library, is near the 7 train and LIRR and has adjacent parking. He has connected with an organizer there looking for activities. They can rent us space of about 3500 sq. ft., essentially a dance floor with a stage, that could be used for court or feast but not fighting. They put on a cultural festival in the fall in which we would be invited to participate. Belle-Assez and Albrecht will join Winfield to investigate the site further.
- Belated reading of Harassment and Bullying Policy (because your seneschal is a dumbass and forgot to open the meeting with it).
- McCarren Park practice is attracting bystander interest, and is also hella fun. Chatelaines & A&S folks, especially *instrumental* bards, please consider joining us! Approx. 7-10pm each Tuesday with good weather. Ice cream truck guaranteed! Anyone for dancing? Drumming!!? Ervald & Alec are the marshals for the fighting and fencing practices. We had 2 visitors from An Dubh last night. Possible excursion to Southern Region War Practice, Aug 15? Albrecht reports that a bunch of us from the city are going, including Ryou, maybe Ragnarr. Might be able to find a ride. If you’re a fighter, come, it’s nice to get some melee time as a change from single combat. Their organizer is also working on ranged weapons. There are fencers and combat archers. https://fb.me/e/16j8DLzNS
- EternalCon demo at Hofstra, Hempstead Long Island, August 7 and 8, needs fighters, fencers, chatelaines, A&S demonstrators. There is plenty of room for fighting outside. We are being offered the opportunity to hold a panel at the con. Ervald is our event steward for this demo. He reports that we could have a table inside, with maybe eight people. Topics of interest for the panel would be costuming, persona development. We will be sharing space outside with the Brooklyn Black Company Armored Combat Team. Sofya adds that we did this event a couple of years ago and there was a lot of interest in the SCA. Edwin has volunteered to serve as a chatelaine for this demo. Marion is available Sunday, but not Saturday, as is Zahra. Albrecht suggested inviting Ryouko’jin. Angelica reminds everyone to BRING BUSINESS CARDS to events (including demos & activities)
- Feast of Fireflies is Aug. 14, 6pm, online. Pre-register for a goody bag! Pennsic potluck theme. Randve Litl Hammar is in charge.
- Barleycorn will be held September 11 (Saturday), with setup on Friday the 10th, in Veteran Memorial Park, Putnam County (Carmel), and is on the EK calendar [https://www.eastkingdom.org/event-details/?eid=3753]. Needs insurance certificate, has youth activities, Provincial court. Aurora is the event steward. She has reached out to organizers of A&S, combat and bardic activities. She reports that we will not be doing Fight for a Cause, putting that off til next year. We’re taking health protection seriously. All the spaces are outdoors , with some covered areas. We have protective gear and pre-packaged food. [Jenna reminded us that funds are available from the kingdom for sanitary budget; Ibrahim confirmed $50.] We’re investigating caterers for pre-packaged food, but need to figure out cost and rules. We expect attendance to be limited, maybe 50-100 people. Iola asked about vendors; Aurora will confirm with the parks dept. whether vendors with valid tax IDs are permitted. Albrecht asked about running Sir Edward’s tournament at Barleycorn, and streaming it. Ervald has the paperwork from past Sir Edward challenges, to continue in his honor. There was great approbation. Francisco inquired if lampworking would be possible. Aurora believes so and will double-check with the parks dept. There are cement-paved, roofed areas. Angelica suggested we invite Pia Maletesta, if merchanting is allowed, and possibly for a lampwork class.
- Fort Tryon Medieval Festival is not being held this year, so there will be no Cloisters Demo.
Committees and Projects
- Østgarðr Trim: Lada is collecting designs for us to vote on. Submit your pre-order at the link supplied in her report below.
- How To Pronounce Østgarðr (and An Dubhaigheann!). Zahra, our topmost local linguist, led us through the Old Norse ø (‘e’ as in ‘get’ but with your lips ROUNDED) and ð (like English ‘th’, voiced as in ‘then’), and addressed the final ´r´, which is optional. It fell out of pronunciation sooner than it fell out of orthography, and indicates the accusative or nominative case. Østgarðr assonates with ‘used garb’. Much hilarity ensued as we all turned on sound and practiced together. Angelica suggested we put an audio file on the Østgarðr website. From Old Norse, we turned to Irish to discover that there is no B in An Dubhaigeainn. ‘bh’ is one consonant, pronounced ‘v’. Say ‘an doov’, not ‘an dub’. Richard points out that the Baron of An Dubh is the Baron OF OF the Dark Abyss.
Other Business
- Jenna will be teaching her popular Pennsic 101 this Sunday 25th, 1pm. She is looking for other people to join who have input on things like parties, parenting, combat. Also willing to do this again on request. See her post in the Østgarðr Facebook group for the meeting link.
- Zahra inquired if people are interested in an International Phonetic Alphabet class. General acclamation says YES! IPA with IPA.
- Jenna has 2 LaZBoy recliners in search of a good home.
- Edwin has cut yew branches to give away.

Greetings! It has been a great pleasure serving the fine people of Østgarðr as Chatelaine these last couple of years, but it is time for me to move on and for some other gentle to bring new joy and passion to the role. I remain yours in service, Laila al-Sanna’ al-Andalusiyya’

July 2021
July 11, 2021, AS LVI
Being the Court of Their Majesties Consul Alberic and Consul Tindal held on July 11, 2021, AS LVI in the East Kingdom at The Eleventh Ethereal Court of the Eastern Consules, the following good citizen of Østgarðr was recognized in Court:
Ryouko’jin of the Iron Skies received the Sovereign’s Cypher
July 17, 2021, AS LVI
The East Kingdom has heirs!
On Saturday, July 17, the sixteen combatants who advanced from the Feeder Tournament lists vied to become the heirs of Consuls Magnus Tindal and Alberic von Rostock. Count Ioannes Aurilius Serpentius emerged victorious!
Count Ioannes Aurelius Serpentius and Countess Ro Honig von Sommerfeldt have been invested as the new Prince and Princess of Tir Mara and therefore heirs to the Eastern throne. Vivant to our Heirs, Prince Ioannes and Princess Honig!
Whyt Whey • Mathghamhain Ua Ruadháin
Mistress Vika Grigina z Prahy moved across the river to Settmour earlier this month, and thus had to step down from her position as Seneschal as she no longer resided within the Canton’s borders. Please join me in thanking her for her years of service to the Canton of Whyt Why.
I’ve taken up the office of Seneschal, although as noted elsewhere I already wear a number of other hats, so as things get back to normal over the coming year I would love to recruit a successor and hand over the position when that becomes practical.
We’ve recently received official confirmation that this year’s Fort Tryon Park Medieval Festival has been cancelled due to Covid, so we’ll have to wait until next autumn to hold our Cloisters Demo.
Our exchequer, Ibrahim, is working towards getting our bank account updated with new signatories as required.
Thanks to Berakha’s efforts, our A&S online classes are a continuing success, and we’re starting to discuss how these might transition to in-person or hybrid events later this year.
Everyone is invited to join us for a picnic in Central Park this Sunday (or if it rains, next Sunday) on the Great Hill starting at 2:00.
Lions End • Nagashima Ichiro Ujimichi
No report submitted.
Brokenbridge • Ragnarr bláskegg
Brokenbridge will be hosting a virtual event called Feast of the Fireflies, August 14th at 6pm. It will be run by Randve Litle Hammer. This event will be to invoke the feeling of going to the Pennsic potluck, which we all miss. We are planning games, a cookbook and just having a good time. We hope you all can join.
Brokenbridge commons will be this Sunday, June 25th. It will be virtual but I am encouraging everyone to go to Whyt Whey’s picnic afterwards if they feel up for a journey to the centralest of parks.
Committees & Projects
Østgarðr Trim • Lada Monguligin
Here is some of the info from Andrixos of Calontir Trim
Trim is 1.5 inches wide, similar in feel and construction to the East Kingdom Tyger.
Repeats are 3 inches between center of design.
Once we are happy with the design, I will submit it for a sample to be made. That takes 6-8 weeks. When we are ready to order, it takes another 6-8 weeks for production. It is not unlikely that I would have it ready for delivery at Birka.
Minimum order is 300 yards. At that amount the price is $3.00 a yard.
If your order is at least 500 yards, the price drops to $2.50/yard.
I will end up with some extra that I will have available online or in my shop.
There are multiple ways that we can handle orders. I will lay that out next week.
I think we need the seahorse populace badge on white background.
I will work on getting a couple of designs of the seahorse together for us to vote on it.
In the meantime you are welcome to submit your pre-orders here:
