August 31st, join Melchior and Lewis as they open their home for an afternoon of crafts and conversation.  Bring your projects you are working on, or just your enthusiasm for chatting.

The start of the summer is upon us and we plan for the warm months and enjoy a lot of events happening around the East Kingdom. We will have commons this Wednesday at 7pm (business meeting will start at 7:30p).

Officers, please send in a report before the start of the meeting if you can. I will have an agenda on Wednesday but I will be talking about the Viceregency elections and process.

Shire of Midland Vale and Shire of Old Stonebridges recognized as Cantons of the Crown Province of Østgarðr

Let it be known to all good populace of the Province of Østgarðr, the Shire of Midland Vale and the Shire of Old Stonebridges,

From the hands of the East Kingdom and the councils of the Society, word has come to us—a decree rendered upon a matter of great moment and unity.

Hear ye now this joyful proclamation:
The Shires of Midland Vale and Old Stonebridges are henceforth recognized as Cantons of the Crown Province of Østgarðr. This change takes effect as of this present week, by the will of our Kingdom and in accordance with Society law.

Long have we awaited this union. Through patient labor and a steadfast heart, we now see our efforts fulfilled. In the days to come, we shall amend our records to reflect this joyous joining, but let no delay hinder our celebration.

Thank you to the officers and the populace of Midland Vale and Old Stonebridge for their desire for this union and their support during this process.  Thank you to the East Kingdom for all the help to get this done.  Thank you to the Vicereines, officers and populace of Østgarðr for their patience and encouragement of this unification!  

Raise your voices and your cups, for on this day, we stand united as One Østgarðr!

Long live the King and Queen of the East!  Long live the Vicereines!  And long live the people of Østgarðr and the East!

I hope you are all well and enjoying Spring.  We just ran a very successful Coronation and I know a lot of us are still recovering.  Because of that and with spring break for schools and several holidays coming up, we will be moving Commons back a week to April 23rd, 2025.  

I will send out a reminder next week.

Attention Ostgardr, after talking to some officers, we are going to be moving Ostgardr Commons to January 22nd this month.  Due to how the calendar worked this month and how several officers have told me they can’t make it this month, I am making the call to move the meeting back a week.

Sunday Solar – Spices

Join us on Northpass for Sunday Solar on January 19th, from 1 to 4 pm for a discussion about spices in Medival cooking.

Please bring an item for the snack potluck that includes ta spice found in the Medieval period and tell us a little bit about that spice.

You can go with something commonly found in modern times like cinnamon, ginger, or garlic. Or feel to delve deeper and bring something with a more obscure spice.

Potluck contributions do not need to be period or made by you.

An ingredient list is appreciated due to food allergies.

Feel free to also bring a project to work on while we chat.

Let it be known that there are proposed changes to the Charter of Ostgardr!

The section of the charter dealing with commons meetings has not been amended to reflect the changes that were introduced during the Covid shutdown; at first we thought those changes would be temporary, but we’ve found they suit us, and we should formalize them.

Charter Amendment: Commons Meetings

  1. COMMONS MEETINGS — CURRENT TEXT
    1. Commons Meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of each calendar month.
      1. A Commons Meeting may be rescheduled by the Seneschal if needed to avoid conflict with holidays or other activities.
      2. The Commons Meeting for a given month may be canceled by the Seneschal due to officer availability or other issues, as long as at least one meeting is held in every calendar quarter.
    2. Commons Meetings will rotate through various locations from month to month, and should include sites in each Canton and in the non-Canton areas of the Province on a regular basis to facilitate attendance by the Populace from all parts of the Province.

COMMONS MEETINGS — PROPOSED REPLACEMENT

  1. Commons Meetings are scheduled for a weeknight during a given week of each calendar month.
    1. The Seneschal may change which day of the week and which week of the month is designated for Commons Meetings so as to suit the needs of the Officers’ Council.
    2. A Commons Meeting may be rescheduled by the Seneschal if needed to avoid conflict with holidays or other activities.
    3. The Commons Meeting for a given month may be canceled by the Seneschal due to officer availability or other issues, as long as at least one meeting is held in every calendar quarter.
  2. Commons Meetings will be held remotely, through a conference-call or video-conferencing service, to facilitate participation by the Populace.

    Prepare, Repair and Air Out all your summer camping gear at the Tavern!

    Simon the Tanner and his beloved wife Berthe are inviting folks to their home in South Salem, NY
    (address provided upon RSVP) on Saturday, June 22, 2024 for an afternoon of leather crafting,
    sewing, socializing, and sharing refreshments to get ready for this summer’s camping season. Garb
    is welcome and recommended.
    • Simon will provide attendees with leather pouch-making supplies and guide folks in
    creating leather pouches and bags.
    • Gareth will be advising on the creation of firestarting kits.
    • There will be a couple of firepits available for those who would like to try out new or old
    recipes over an open fire.
    • There is plenty of space if you want to try setting up your tent (to check for wear and tear)
    • There will be sewing supplies for those who wish to make repairs to their garb
    • And there will be music and refreshments in the Tavern.
