Basics of Japanese Poetry Tanka and Chōka
Led by Kikkawa Michime
If you were a member of the Japanese nobility, you were a poet. Mastery of poetics was a required skill. Careers, reputations, and status were made or broken by one’s skill at creating tanka, the ancestor of the haiku, that captures and distills concepts or moments in time down to 31 syllables. This class is about a short history of the form, and how a full-blown, generations-long culture war happened around what was considered appropriate subject matter and word choice. The class also briefly touches on the chōka, a longer version of the tanka, used when 31 syllables is not going to be enough. If there is time and inclination, students may compose their own tanka at the end of the class.
Class 3 (2-3pm)
Gender Non Conformity & the Divine: Stories of Indian Gods.
Led by Countess Chatricam Meghanta
Consort’s Bard will perform the story of Aravan & Krishna. Then she will host a discussion about the story and reference other stories about how the gods were able to shift shape and gender as required.

Led by Ciaran ua Meic Thire
Class description: Come learn about and try one of the oldest arts on paper! Cut paper arts have been adorned the walls of temples and farmhouses for over 1700 years by people from all walks of life. They were done as religious decorations, window flowers, put in pottery and in hair styles and even as performance arts. We’ll talk about the whats, the whens, the wheres, the whys and the hows and (depending on space and interest) offer a take home piece that you can try out! Come try a truly beautiful art with one of the lowest costs of entry (all you need is paper, something to cut with, and something to cut on). If you can trace with a pencil you can do this and I guarantee you already have!
