A wide variety of activities are planned to add to the joy of the day. Read below for the details of the activities. Check the schedule tab above to see when activities will occur.

Heavy List Tournaments & Fighting

The Crown Province is please to offer two tournaments for heavy list fighters.

Østgarðr Provincial Heavy Weapons Championship

All fighters both from within and without the Crown Province are welcome to compete for the title of Østgarðr Provincial Heavy Weapons Champion. Details of the tournament format will follow soon.

Viscount Edward Zifran of Gendy Memorial Unbelt Challenge

Once again, the Viscount Sir Master Master Edward Zifran of Gendy the Bloody Bastard Baron of the Eastern Court Memorial Unbelt Challenge returns to Barleycorn. The point of this challenge is to encourage unbelted fighters to learn the non-fighting aspects of knighthood, things like heraldry, history, and courtly pastimes. As such, there will be a written exam before the fighting begin.

While all fighters, belted or otherwise, are invited to fight in the Challenge, only unbelted fighters who score a 60 out of 100 on the exam will be allowed to collect points towards winning it. The questions on the written exam may include, but are not limited to, questions about: SCA heraldry; SCA history; medieval history; the Rules of the List; medieval and renaissance dance; poetry and song; chess; order or precedence; ranks and titles; East Kingdom tradition; food and serving etiquette.

  • This tournament is only open to unbelted fighters. (Belting fighters, please see below)
  • There will be a written portion and a fighting portion.
  • The written portion will be a selection of questions Every Fighter Should Know If They Want To Be A Knight. A score of 60 or higher (out of 100) is required to be considered for the prize in the fighting portion, though all unbelted fighters, regardless of the score, will be able to fight in the fighting portion.
  • The fighting portion will be a timed “challenge” tourney. All those fighters who passed the exam must challenge other fighters, belted and unbelted, who did not pass or take the exam, and each other, as many as they can, within a set time limit. The fights will be held simultaneously in the field. The fighters will report their results to the MoL after each fight, and then look for someone else to fight after reporting the results. The fighter who wins the fight gets two points, the other gets one point, and if they fight a knight, master at arms, or royal, they get an extra point.
  • There will be prizes given for best test score, most wins fighting, and overall high score.

Østgarðr Provincial Youth Fighting Championship (and open list youth combat)

All youth fighters both from within and without the Crown Province are welcome to compete for the title of Østgarðr Provincial Youth Fighting Champion.

Youth combatants are invited to report to the youth list at noon to check in, armor up, and get inspected.

We’ll begin with non-scored warm-up rounds to get everyone limbered up and let fighters take the measure of the other participants.

Starting some time after 1:00, we’ll fight separate tournaments for each of the three age divisions.

For any division with less than eight fighters, this will be fought as a round-robin, with one point for each win. If there are eight or more fighters in a division, this will be fought as a double-elimination tournament, with non-destructive byes. In both cases, double-kills will be re-fought as many times as needed to produce a winner for that bout.

Upon completion of the divisional tournaments, three candidates will be selected for the championship by asking the highest-ranked combatant in each division if they are willing and able to serve as youth champions of Ostgardr; if they are unwilling, or never attend local events, we’ll skip down to the second-ranked finisher and so on to find a championship candidate for that age range. If selecting one from each age range doesn’t yield three candidates (perhaps because one division doesn’t have any fighters at all, or all of its fighters decline), we’ll take more than one candidate from other divisions as needed.

Starting around 2:00, the final three will fight round-robin for the championship, with mixed-division fights being fought at the calibration of the lower division. The provincial champion will be selected from those three candidates by the judgement of the Vicereines, if they so choose, or calculated by wins and losses if they withhold judgement.

After the championship has been decided, we can open the field for melees and battlefield games.

Cricut Medallion Making Class

You can never have enough bling! Come try a “make and take” project using the Cricut machine to make a variety of different East Kingdom and Ostgardr Populace badges!! Open to kids at heart but let’s have the little ones have first go. One medallion per person please as supplies are limited. Your instructor will be Magnifica Arabella De Mere.

Youth Activities

During the morning, materials will be available for youth to do some simple weaving projects. Beads and string will also be available for necklace and bracelet making.

In the afternoon, after dayboard, the young people will have the opportunity to “firebomb” the evil dragon’s fortification. (Disclaimer: there will not be any real fire, nor bombs.) Hopscotch (which is thought to have its origins as a Roman medieval training exercise) will also be available to play.

Medieval tabletop games will be available at all times for anyone wishing  to engage in quieter, more thoughtful activities.

Details for the Østgarðr Provincial Archery Championship and Østgarðr Provincial Thrown Weapons Championship and will follow in the coming days.
