Ostgardr Commons
August 22, 2014
Chronicler: E-horse went out. Suggest Sept issue full of shiny stuff, e.g.
Angelica’s “largesse” article, anybody else’s photos of cool stuff.
Web: Norana has migrated most of existing site to WordPress on
ostgardr.eastkingdom.org; after we decide it’s ready for prime time, we can change
the forwarding so ostgardr.org points there. Will need to carry over e-mail
aliases. Discussion of events calendar; let the Google calendar die and replace
with a Wordpress calendar on ostgardr.eastkingdom.org.
Earl Marshal: Jibril is now Regional Marshal. Valgard will be marshal in charge at
Barleycorn.
Vicereine: Edward will be Lord Mayor of Pennsic 45.
Viceroy: Who’s running QCFFD? Suuder. Need to put on Web site ASAP
(some discussion of whether it needs to be on Web site in order to be covered
by SCA insurance).
Who is Brokenbridge Seneschal? Tormundr and Suuder have agreed that Suuder will do
it; still need official turnover of paperwork. Lori will look into exactly what’s
missing.
Discussion of largesse, both Ostgardr’s donations to Crown and stuff they gave us.
Upcoming Events
Barleycorn: Stuff is in Google doc at tinyurl.com/Barleycorn2014
Suuder is running archery. Crossbows are OK.
Katherine & Brekke have arranged a replay of Judith’s vigil, on the beach.
Mass transit pickup: we’ll agree on two trains that somebody will meet, and if
you’re not on one of those trains, it’s up to you.
Need judges for brewing competition.
As of two days ago, 40 on-board seats reserved (of 192 seats); probably more like 60
by now.
Can’t use yurts 22 & 23.
There are 120 bunks in yurts; we’ve seldom filled them up.
Discussion of boat race, etc. Green & White pavilion will NOT come, because we
don’t really need it and it’s not worth the trouble for this event. List-field
ropes & stakes will come (we hope).
Thrown Weapons U. at Putnam County Fairgrounds the week after Barleycorn. Bring own
food; the only thing scheduled is throwing stuff.
Queens County Farm Faire Demo 9/20-21
Ft Tryon 9/28; Acre event and Coronation are both 9/27.
Day in Florence at Blue Mountain 10/24-26. Brekke is doing feast.
Probably 1/17-18 (MLK wkend) Seasons’ Beatings at Blue Mountain.
Re-starting Sunday classes at Enigma Bookshop, in October. Lots of requests for
embroidery & sewing, but other topics welcome too.
Mask-making workshop tomorrow @ Bornanders’
Masked Ball 1st weekend of December at Blue Mountain.
Brokenbridge & Whyt Whey intend to get their own exchequers and bank accounts.
Discussion of minimum balance to avoid fees; look at different banks.
Upcoming Meetings

Oct. 17 Commons: Maria in Queens
Nov. 21 Commons: Vicereine’s
Dec. 20 Commons (Saturday) at our place

there were three SCA people in it); in case anybody asks.

Vicereine again: Devra Langsam is in rehab from aortic aneurysm at Borough Park
Rehab, 4905 10th Ave. Bklyn 11219. Motion to send a bouquet of flowers

Greetings to All Gentles (including those who study
the arts of the bow and battlefield),
There may be some yet of you who have not had the
glad news that we, the populace of the great Crown
Province of Ostgardr, have won the East Kingdom Royal
Largesse Challenge, yea, even over competition from
our many worthy sister shires and baronies, near and
far.
This signal honor comes to us from the benefice of
our artisans of whose work and generosity we may be
justly proud, our warriors who crafted weapons
decorated in the Kingdom's purple and gold, and from
good gentles all who raided their personal stores for
items to contribute to the Crown's Royal Gift Chest.
What a treasure trove we gathered!
Delicate and pristine scribal work on parchment
SIX Brilliantly worked glass medallions (which made
Empress Caolifhionn gasp in delight)
Woolen hoods as decorative as they will be be warm
against winter winds
Veils, Caps, Hats, and lovely aprons.
Pouches to hold one's goods swinging from one's belt,
in fabrics fine and sturdy
Jewelry cunningly made
Kumihimo braids and belts in lovely colors
Feastware cups, goblets, bowls, plates, napkins,
candleholders
Lanterns
and an immense amount of fabric trim and buttons to
inspire and aid in the future production of garb.
(over a half of our points from a single individual,
long may she be blessed for her gift!)
You know the beginning of this tale, and its happy
tail, but not yet the middle, where we went in
procession at Pennsic (in the high heat of the
afternoon) on the Saturday before the Opening
Ceremonies for the War, from Ostgardr camp, to the
East Kingdom Royal Encampment.
Heed ye!
Led by our Viceroy Gui, and Vicereine Johanne, with
honored members of our court, champions, and a
musician fine to pipe us in, we processed, drawing not
a little attention, due to the burden of largesse (in
a six foot litter of purple satin) carried by four
sturdy men of sterling worth, and an equally goodly
escort to haul the wagon of weapons covered in cloth
of gold. Thirty strong we entered the courtyard and
(after a suitable and sweltering interval until both
the Majesties could receive us) we approached their
thrones.
Formal welcomes and the reason for our visit given,
we lowered the litter, brought forth the wagon, and
invited their Majesties to examine the now unveiled
Largesse.

Our Good Empress Caoilfhionn, wreathed in smiles
took up one item after another, and showed great
pleasure at our many and diverse offerings. Emperor
Brennan leapt at the opportunity to sample the heft
and balance of the axes and maces brought forward.
Their pleasure (and the assurance of Mistress
Saerlaith, the gatherer of goods and counter of
points, that we at that moment had the highest count)
brought tears of pleasure and gratitude to my eyes.
Still, nothing was certain! We many (possessed by a
competitive spirit) waited through the war until East
Kingdom Court to learn the final count. We had the joy
of witnessing Judith Fitzhenry the Uncertain become
the newest Laurel in our Provincial Crown Province, a
long awaited recognition (by my reckoning). After many
fine elevations, at last the Crown called out that
Ostgardr had won the largesse challenge. Escorted by
Lords Suuder and Ervald, on behalf of the populace of
Ostgardr, I accepted the Empresses's kind embrace, the
token basket of good things, and our bragging rights
for the next year.
Various photographs of the submission of the
Largesse (see August 2nd), and the award acceptance
(soon. I promise!) can be seen on Facebook page for
the SCA NYC: Crown Province of Ostgardr. It may be
easier to (later) find them in the files for the
page).
