Meetings

Ostgardr Commons

January 17, 2014

Transcribed by Carol Smith

Attendance was taken through the Seneschal’s sign-in sheet before and during the meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 8:10 PM.

Officer Reports

Seneschal: The Fourth Quarter report was submitted on time, and the bylaws, in absence of any comments, were approved as posted.  Season's Beatings is now firmly scheduled for February 1.

Arts & Sciences: Stuff is going on.  On February 7, Luigi and Jackie Kapaj are hosting Jimmi Lee’s stained glass lecture in preparation for a stained glass hands-on workshop to be held at a later date.  See also Chatelaine’s report for more possible A&S.

Archery: It’s too cold to shoot. Practice will resume in the spring.

Broken Bridge: We have a small fight practice site from 12:00 to 3:00 Sundays.  $5.00 per person; site is good for drills but there is not much space for fighting.
Viking Day is May 17.  10:00 AM. Details to follow.

Exchequer: We now have more signatures on our account, but our Seneschal is still not among them as she was unable to addend the mass signing in December.  The attempt at on-line access to our account was a failure; sign-in appeared successful, but failed on all attempts to use it, and the number given to correct the difficulties did not solve the problem. Will attempt to fix by speaking to a human in person rather than to a machine.
The Kingdom has lost a few of our checks and has requested replacement of same.

Chatelaine: We are looking at Gold Key in hopes of consolidating and inventorying what we have.  We need to sort any extant garb by size and style and hope to be able to accessorize outfits appropriately. We need assistance from each of the Cantons: what they have, and what they need.
Lions End has clothing; Northpass has feast gear.  We do not know Broken Bridge or Whyte Whey gold Key supplies.
The bookstore at which we did the demo is very interested in the SCA and has offered free space for A&S workshops.  It might be possible open them to the public; there is a back room which can hold 20 – 30 people which we could use.  We might be able to charge a small materials fee in order to send people home with samples and supplies to continue working on their projects; $5.00 was a recommended asking price, neither too high nor not high enough to cover expenses.

Herald: The Order of the Sea Star and the Lions End badge both passed Society level.  Lions End Billet Herald passed Society level as well.

Lions End: The March site having fallen through, we are now looking at a possible November/December time frame, with the possibility of reviving Lions in Winter.

Knight Marshal: We have the new fight space in Bushwick, which has lots of parking and is a good space for drill.  The site is small, being a band practice room, and costs $5.00 per person.

Chronicler [via e-mail]:  The EK Seneschal has e-mailed (twice in two months!) to tell us that she likes the E-Horse--go us :-)

Events and Demos:

Birka is next weekend.

Tavern is March 1 and 2, Blue Mountain Trail Lodge; Bears Tavern meets the Vikings.

Brew U is in Stonemarche.

Riding of the Marches: no further word as the January Northpass meeting was called on account of snow.

The Østgarðr-An Dubheaigainn Second Annual Challenge is to be held at St. Margaret’s, Plainview, preferably on June 7.  There is a lot of property (17 acres) for outdoor activities, and we have use of the church proper for court and bardic, though there are restrictions in church usage (do not go into the altar area, and please present a reverential attitude to the Presence Light).  The entire building is undergoing renovation, and the plumbing is old.  We will need to rent porta-potties, although the downstairs bathrooms are both available for use.  The area is “limited handicapped accessible”, having no elevator but with a chair lift and railing, and the stairs are narrow.  The kitchen area is small but does have two ovens and a 4-burner stove.  The upstairs bathrooms are in the office area and are not to be used as their plumbing is very old.  We are not to use the cemetery.  There may be other restrictions, depending upon our negotiations.  We will need a good Gold Key for this event as several parishioners have expressed interest in attending.  (Can we provide a discounted entry fee for church members?)

Riverfest has been cancelled; the new site and the new parking restrictions made it very difficult for us last year, and spectators did not stop by much at all, making the difficulties not worth the effort.

Musicians' Day is on the calendar for November 21-23 at Blue Mountain Trail Lodge.

Workshops:

Lions End woodcarving workshop is ongoing after the monthly meeting. [ed. note: we could use a small hand vacuum for cleanup.]

Old business:

Business cards were discussed.  We agreed to go with the second sample Maria Dedvukaj presented, with the logo on the left and contact information on the right.  It is a necessity for the officers who have contact with outsiders more than for the officers who interact primarily within the SCA organization itself.  The cards cost about $5.00 for 250 cards.  Each officer is responsible for proofing his or her own contact information, but the overall logo and layout are as presented on the diagram

We have a prototype website redesign at http://ostgardr.wordpress.com .  We need updated pictures with proper releases for it.  Viceroy Gui immediately suggested a “Best of Østgarðr” photo contest as a possible way to get new pictures.

New business:

There was no new business.

Upcoming meetings:

February 21: Laurie’s office, Bronx

March 21: Johanna’s home, Brooklyn

DATE CHANGE: April 25, TBA

May 16: Sofia’s, Queens

June 20: TBA

The meeting was adjourned at 9:35, and we proceeded to enjoy the cake Sofya brought to celebrate our Vicereine Johanna’s birthday.
