for light pole in DublinFrom the Chronicler

It's been a busy summer, and the folk of our peripatetic Province have been on the move, whether traveling to East Kingdom events or research junkets overseas.  During their sojourn in Ireland, the Seahorse Editorial Staff saw these fellows on a Dublin bridge and thought fondly of Ostgardr:

Meetings

June Commons Minutes

Transcribed by Carol Eskesen Smith

June 15, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 8:20 PM.  Officers attending were Carl Haicken, deputy seneschal, Dyanna Flynn, mistress of arts, Richard Solensky, historian, Mitchell Krevor, exchequer, Debby Krevor, chamberlain, Aimee (Lilli) Haicken, chatelaine, William Bornander, Northpass seneschal and our host, and Brad Richey, archery marshal.

David Minsky, Viceroy, and Johanna Motyleski, Vicereine, arrived after the meeting was called to order.

Officers

Deputy Seneschal:  Found out a few minutes before the meeting that our Seneschale would not be attending the meeting; nothing to report.

Historian: History is an ongoing process.

Lions End (Carol Smith reporting unofficially for the seneschal, who could not attend): Bellmore Demo will not have MSR help as they are having a camping event that weekend.  We have asked An Dubheaigainn for help; if so, we will have a pretty good display.  Otherwise, it will probably be a table and some fencers.

Arts and Sciences: Quarterly reports have been filed, with the exception of one canton, which shall remain nameless.  (Information available on request.)

Exchequer: We have money.

Chamberlain:  We are in process of finding a permanent place for the Østgarðr feast gear; it should be ready by the fall.  Meanwhile, our next use of it is in Northpass, so it might as well stay there. [Note:  after the meeting, Thomas Martin informed us that we seem to have accumulated extra stuff as not everything we have fits into the bins, and Østgarðr never had sharp knives before.  Where do they go, and how do we return them?]

Northpass:  Barleycorn is progressing; discussion postponed to events portion of meeting.

Archery:  Northpass is developing archery in odd spurts.  Both Staten Island and Lions End are holding regular, well-attended practices.

Upcoming Events & Demos:

Riverfest
is next weekend.  Not too many classes were available for this year, but perhaps we could have some for next year.  Six or seven of the Battle of the Nations crew will be attending; two are coming from Arizona, and one from Michigan.  They will bring their own insurance papers as their activities are not covered by the SCA, but will use our area for their steel display.

[At this point David Minsky, our Viceroy, and Johanna Motyleski, our Vicereine, arrived (after much traffic delay; Mr. Minsky had left his house at 5:30 to attend the meeting).  There was a brief intermission as he and Johanna got caught up on the officer reports.]

Back to Riverfest:

We have the Krevor Green and White and Harry Minike’s yellow and white, which is about the same size, available.  Perhaps we can set them up on opposite sides of the display area, with pop-ups between?

Cars need to be off the drop-off area by 11 am.  Drop-off area opens around 8.

Demos will generally be ongoing, but fighting and fencing will be scheduled.  We may have thrown weapons demos, but don’t count on it, and may have an archery display, but no shooting.  Luigi will bring his pell for display and training.  If we want announcements of what we are demonstrating, we have to write up the announcements of what we want said and get it to Lori by Tuesday.

Remember that the Clearwater will be at Riverfest and that they have expressed an interest in what we do, so we might be invited to the Clearwater festival, which is on Østgarðr lands.

Barleycorn:

Will use ACCEPS for reservations; announcement is going up soon.
There will be event championships, but not Provincial championships.
We are looking for help in various positions. [Propositioning occurred after the meeting.]
We are looking for children’s activities.
We are looking to make event badges for all event workers, for easy identification.  If we do not have time to hand out badges to everyone, we will have them for the main people serving as sources of information for the various activities, at least.  This proposal was greeted with much enthusiasm and both the Northpass and the Brokenbridge A&S crews offered assistance for this.
If a pilgrim badge is desired, it must be designed soon, as it takes time to carve the mold and then pour the pewter castings.  We are running out of time.
There will also be Edward’s unbelted fighting and an A&S display.  See event write-up for details.

Fiber Frolic

Event proposal approved, same site as last year; October 6.  Pre-registration is a must, but there is no site fee.  Brokenbridge will again host a raffle and is requesting donations for it.  Potluck lunch dishes are requested, and they would like a pilgrim’s badge as well.  Again, a simple design is required.  Pilgrim badges will be made in the order they are received, not in “next event” order, so it pays to have a design ready to go.
There was some discussion of other events being held over the Columbus Day holiday weekend, but it was felt that this event was sufficiently small and local as to not interfere with larger, more distant, events.

Debby Krevor proposed a new demo: the Tartan Day parade, which is a 10-block parade down 6th Avenue.  It is Scottish themed, but Debby commented that she would help provide information on a “look” for participants, for what would have been worn in Scotland during our time period.  (Viking is acceptable.)  We need a minimum of 10 marchers.  There was much enthusiasm for looking at/ marching with Men in Kilts.

After some discussion (Does Northpass need a Provincial July meeting for Barleycorn?  No.), it was decided not to hold one.  The August meeting was moved to August 24 as it was felt that the 17th was too close to the end of Pennsic to be productive.  We will ask Alexander and Eularia to host the meeting at their place as it is the most convenient for our Northpass contingent, but have the Motylesky residence, freely and generously offered, as a backup should they not be able to.

The Viceroy noted that we again need an officer’s meeting, but suggested we take it to the Officers List.  There will be an Østgarðr court on Tuesday of War Week, which is also Fry Night.  There will be pilgrim badges, fun, frying, and surprises.

The Vicereine reported that she could use help at Lost and Found and requested volunteers.

Carl and Lilli reported that the Pennsic Pity Party would be held on the middle Saturday of Pennsic at their place, but that parking would be atrocious, so car pooling would be in order.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15.

Directions to August Commons

August Commons will be on Friday, August 24 in the basement meeting room of Lorree True and Jeff Berry,  552 Riverside Drive (just south of 125th Street on Riverside Drive), New York  NY.

DIRECTIONS

BY CAR:
By car from the west, take the Henry Hudson to the 125th street exit.
By car from the east, cross somewhere and get to 125th and RSD.  (For example, the Triboro Bridge dumps you onto 125th; when you get to Broadway, start looking for parking.)  Your best bet for parking is up around Grant's Tomb.  If you do park by Grant's Tomb, you'll need to walk east and then down.  We're on a short chunk of RSD which is one-way, and next to the tallest building for blocks (well, excepting  Riverside Church).

BY MASS TRANSIT:
By subway, take the #1 train to 125th St.  Exit to the right after coming out of the turnstile and go down the escalator to 124th St. (there's a sign in the station pointing the way). On the street, you'll be at the intersection of Broadway and Tiemann Pl.  Go up the hill on Tiemann Pl. towards the park.  That's Riverside Dr.  Turn right on Riverside and our building is in the middle of the block (a little block heading downhill toward the huge Columbia residence next door).  Shout for someone to let you in!
