The meeting took place on
April 20, 2012, at Carl (Friedrich Grimm) and our
chatelaine Aimee (Lilie Dubh ingen ui Mordha)
Haicken’s house on City Island. Other officers
attending were: Elisha Friedman (Ysenda MacBeth of
Islay), seneschal; David Minsky (Sir Gui Avec Cheval),
Viceroy; Johanna Motyleski (Johanna i Visby),
Vicereine; Mitchel Krevor (Master Ian of Clan
Mitchell), Exchecquer; Gui Dioguardi (Baroné Francesco
Gaetano Gréco d’Edessa), Herald; Dyanna Flynn (Lady
Judith FitzHenry), Mistress of Arts, Richard Solensky
(Master Richart the Poor of Ely), Historian, Debbie
Krevor (Mistress Katherine Gillesflower), Chamberlain;
Brad Richey (Lord Suuder), archery marshal; and John
Estep (Lord Þormundr Inn Landverski, Brokenbridge
Seneschal.
Officers
Vicereine: an Ori Grimm, a former
member of An Dubheaigainn was recovering at North
Shore Hospital.
Mistress of Arts: Brokenbridge
is hosting an A&S day on the second Friday of each
month. Last month was a review of Viking history and
culture, and next month will be Silk banner painting.
Exchequer: we have money and he
had no updates to his previous report.
Herald: no report.
Brokenbridge Seneschal: reported
on the time and place for the Brokenbridge A&S
banner painting.
Archery Marshal: the archery schedule
remained the same as last year for this year, and that
Lions End will schedule additional practices as
desired locally.
Chatelaine: first quarter
reports were generally received on time but that
Northpass had a problem; this is the third reporting
deadline missed. It was reported to Kingdom but will
be dealt with internally. Lilli is on it. Owls head
demo planning is progressing nicely.
Chamberlain: was not asked to give a
report.
Recent Events
The tavern event was held
in Northpass but the report is not yet prepared. The
Chamberlain reported that the feast gear has not yet
been returned to her custody; it is still being stored
in Northpass (and thank you for the extra time; we’re
still involved in cleaning out the ancestral home, and
it’s taking a lot of time.)
Old
Business/ Local Events
There is a Schola in An
Dubheaigainn on April 28; please attend and support
our neighbors.
The Viking Day demo at
Owls Head Park is May 19, 12:00 to 6:00. We have been
asked to bring more games. The Riverfest Demo will
also host the Clearwater, so there will probably be a
larger crowd this year. Some discussion ensued over
the possible scheduling of Medieval Dancing on the
stage, but the dancers promptly requested that it
remain on the grass.
Lions End was asked to
participate in the Bellmore Street Fair, which occurs
the same weekend as Queens Farms. They were originally
asked to participate as fencers, but they really
wanted Olympic fencing. It was explained that the SCA
does not do Olympic fencing, but the organizers are
still interested in what we do. Lions End felt that we
could not put on the demo alone, but possibly could
with the help of An Dubheaigainn, whose people don’t
usually participate in the major Ostgardr demos. If
Østgarðr agrees, we could ask them for help. The
consensus was that it would be a wonderful opportunity
for both groups, if we can pull it together with them.
New
Business
Discussion of how to
approach demonstrations – the various needs of
different demos, such as general information demos,
Boy Scout demos, recruiting demos, etc. There followed
much discussion, and a date to learn about what is
necessary at each type of demo was set up. The demo
will be held at our Vicereine’s house on Sunday, May
6, at 1:00 PM. All who participate in demos, even if
it is in the preparation, are encouraged to attend.
Officer terms were
discussed. Ms. Friedman may be stepping down as
Seneschal before her term is up, and her term should
be ending soon in any case. Who wants the job? We
referred to Kingdom Law for any mandatory term limits,
and also need to check with Corpora to be in total
compliance.
On Sunday, April 29,
Yesenda MacBeth is giving a class in Celtic Knotwork
in the meeting room at Alexandre’s and Eularia’s home.
In June, a group is going to Known Worle Scribal
Symposium on June 23; they will be home in time to be
at the Riverfest demo the next day.
On May 26 (rain date June
9) Jenna Childerslay is giving her Pennsic 101 class.
This is before the last day of preregistration, so
Pennsic newcomers can decide whether they should go
(do they have enough garb? Food? Tentage? Etc.) There
will be some discussion of preregistration procedures
and camp structures.
Next Month's Ostgardr
Commons
The next meeting will be
May 18 (day before Owls Head), in Alexandre’s basement
meeting room.
The meeting was adjourned
at 9:40.
Note: mundane names were
used throughout the Officer Report section as this is
a modern business meeting. Once it delved into
SCA-related information, SCA names were used.
May Commons will be on Friday, May 18 in the basement
meeting room of Jeff Berry and Lorree True, 552
Riverside Drive (just south of 125th Street on
Riverside Drive.)
DIRECTIONS
By Car:
From the West:
Take the Henry Hudson to the 125th street exit.
From the East:
Cross somewhere and get to 125th and RSD. (For
example, the Triboro Bridge dumps you onto 125th; when
you get to Broadway, start looking for parking.)
Your best bet for parking is up around Grant's
Tomb. If you do park by Grant's Tomb, you'll
need to walk east and then down. We're on a
short chunk of RSD which is one-way, and next to the
tallest building for blocks (well, excepting
Riverside Church).
By Subway:
Take the #1 train to 125th St. Exit to the
right after coming out of the turnstile and go down
the escalator to 124th St. (there's a sign in the
station pointing the way). On the street, you'll be at
the intersection of Broadway and Tiemann Pl. Go
up the hill on Tiemann Pl. towards the park.
That's Riverside Dr. Turn right on Riverside and
our building is in the middle of the block (a little
block heading downhill toward the huge Columbia
residence next door). Shout for someone to let
you in!
Riverdale
Riverfest Demo
Sunday,
June 24, 2012, in the Riverdale section of the
Bronx, on the riverside campus of the College of Mount
St. Vincent. Calling all fighters, fencers,
weavers, calligraphers, dancers, musicians et al. --
what a great opportunity to showcase the SCA's
talents! Open to the public noon-6:00 p.m.;
participants should show up at 9:00 a.m.
